Mumbai to start receiving rains anytime soon

June 19, 2016 2:04 PM |

Mumbai rainsThe long awaited Monsoon rains in Mumbai could make an appearance anytime now. The upper air cyclonic circulation over South Chhattisgarh, adjoining Vidarbha and Telangana region is extending up to mid¬tropospheric levels. This system may pour some good amounts of rain in Mumbai during next 24 hours. Thereafter, intensity of rainfall will decrease significantly. Only patchy light rains will be observed over the area, with isolated places receiving moderate rains. Humid conditions will continue over the region.

The normal date for the onset of Monsoon in Mumbai is June 10. We are already far behind and Southwest Monsoon is not likely to cover the city of dreams anytime soon.

The western arm of the Southwest Monsoon has just touched the Konkan & Goa region so far. This could be attributed to the feeble Monsoon surge over the region. The western arm is not strengthening due to weak westerly winds blowing over the region.

However, now we can expect southwesterly winds to gain strength during next 24 hours. Moderate to heavy showers are likely over some parts of Konkan & Goa. Mumbai may receive mainly light rain with the suburbs receiving moderate rains at some places.

The last spell of good rains on June 12, brought 37 mm of rain in the city. On and off patchy rains have been observed in Mumbai since then. During last 24 hours, the city recorded just 2 mm.

June is one of the rainiest months for the city. Till June 19, Mumbai has recorded mere 45.2 mm of rain against the normal average rainfall of 523.1 mm.
