Mumbai To Receive Pre-Monsoon Showers This Week

June 3, 2024 5:58 PM | Skymet Weather Team

The financial capital Mumbai has remained dry so far in the pre-monsoon season. The city recorded a spell of rain on 13th May and traces of rainfall on 16th May. The coastal town has clocked a mere 21mm of rainfall in the pre-monsoon month of May. More pre-monsoon showers, before the onset of southwest monsoon, are likely during this week.

A typical southwesterly stream is still missing off the coast of Konkan. Strong southwesterly/ westerly winds, perpendicular to the orientation of the Western Ghats favours sharp showers for the city. This desired pattern is unlikely to appear for the next one week. However, conditions are turning good for some pre-monsoon activity, during this week.

Under the influence of gentle westerly winds over the Arabian Sea, abeam Mumbai, a cloudy sky and moderate sea breeze is likely over the city for the next 3-4 days. The cloudy sky will restrict the temperature rise and may rather give light rain. Short spells of passing showers are likely for the city till midweek. A cyclonic circulation is likely to form off the Konkan Coast in the Arabian Sea on 07th June. This will be a small-scale feature, but still, be good enough to lash the city with typical pre-monsoon showers between 07th and 10th of June.

The rains will largely remain confined to the Goa-Konkan coast on the upside of the Western Ghats. At best, it may spill over to some parts of Madhya Maharashtra. However, these rains will not travel deep inside Maharashtra, to take the monsoon over the interior parts. Notwithstanding, the coastal towns like Goa, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Alibag, Mumbai, Thane and Dahanu will have moderate showers and kickstart the monsoon, at the earliest.
