Mumbai to get the taste of Monsoon rains soon, heavy showers expected in the next 24 hours

July 3, 2020 10:12 AM | Skymet Weather Team

During the last 3 to 4 days, rain activities remained confined to the southern suburbs of Mumbai. The cumulative rainfall over Colaba in the last 4 days is 294 mm.

During the last 24 hours, 58 mm of rain is recorded over Colaba. Although Santacruz observatory of Mumbai has also been recording light to moderate rain for the last one week or so. But overall rainfall over Mumbai and suburbs remained scanty.

Cyclonic circulation, which is over central parts of Konkan and Goa, will move in the northern direction along the Maharashtra coast. Due to its movement and convergence of strong westerly and southwesterly winds over North Konkan and Goa, rain activities are expected to increase significantly over Mumbai and suburbs in the next 24 hours. Possibility of 3-digits rainfall is very high over parts of Mumbai between the night of July 3rd and July 5th.

Traffic jams and waterlogging in low lying areas cannot be ruled out. We expect that rain activities will continue after July 5th as well but the intensity of rain will reduce and the weather will not go completely dry over Mumbai. There will be significant relief from ongoing sultry weather conditions for at least the next 3 to 4 days.

Heavy rains along with strong winds could cause disruption in communication and connectivity. With waterlogging and inundation of low-lying areas, commuting services are going to be hampered. The heavy spell may as well affect rail, road, and air traffic simultaneously. Mumbaikars need to stay on high alert and exercise the utmost caution for the next three days.
