Heavy Monsoon Activity Predicted This Weekend For Mumbai, Image: Money Control

Mumbai is coming up for an active monsoon spell over the next three days. Friday, Saturday and Sunday are slated for moderate rain and thundershowers. Some places are likely to have a few rounds of heavy rainfall. The intensity and spread of weather activity could be large, tomorrow. Soaking weather conditions will start easing out at the start of next week and remain reasonably good for the whole week, as such.

There is a low-pressure area lying over the East-Central Arabian Sea, off the Maharashtra coast, with cyclonic circulation extending to mid-levels. The presence of this system has strengthened the seasonal surge along the Konkan Coast. Today’s uptick in weather activity is attributable to this system. However, with unfavourable sea conditions and large shear, the low pressure is likely to weaken significantly in the next 24 hours.

Notwithstanding the diffusion of low pressure in the Arabian Sea, there is another feature coming up for the continuation of weather activity over the weekend. Presently, there is a low-pressure area marked over parts of West Bengal and adjoining regions. The circulation of this system is expected to shift over central parts of Madhya Pradesh by late tomorrow. This feature will gain strength and move to the tri-junction of Southwest Madhya Pradesh, Southeast Rajasthan and adjoining parts of North Madhya Maharashtra on Sunday. Weather activity on Saturday and Sunday will be associated with this weather system.

Mumbai has witnessed a lean monsoon phase for the last about two weeks. The capital city has received a mere 37mm rainfall, in 16 days, between 08th and 23rd August 2024. The city has gathered only 207mm of rainfall in August, so far, against the normal of 585.2mm. The likely wet spell over the next three days will surely close the gap, at least partially. Subsequently, the rainfall between the 26th and 31st August may not suffice to catch up with the monthly target.
