Day temperatures have been soaring in Mumbai for the last one week, making the weather in the city highly uncomfortable. Since January 30, when the maximum had settled at 33.9°C the day temperature in the city has been on a rising trend and is recording in the mid-thirties.
On Thursday too, the day temperature in Mumbai had settled at a whopping 35.3°C, which is 6 degrees above the normal average. And though we are entering the phase when the days start to get warmer, the sudden rise in temperature is not often observed.
Going by the data available with Skymet Meteorology Division in India the maximum had once shot up to 39.6°C, on February 25, 1966, which is a historical record. In the last ten years, the highest maximum to have been recorded is 39.1°C, on February 22, 2012. But such high temperatures are rarely observed during the month as the average temperature for Mumbai in February is 30°C.
The reason behind the rise in temperature is the warm land winds which begin to affect the city from 10 pm and last till the afternoon hours. The sea winds which are usually cooler sets in late, around 2 pm by then the maximums have recorded their highest level.
As we enter further in to the month of February, the temperatures will rise gradually therefore we do not expect much change in the weather condition of the city for the entire month. Moreover the humidity is expected to rise which will make the weather more uncomfortable.
