June 15, 2014 2:40 PM |

According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Divison in India, after heavy monsoon showers in Mumbai on Sunday morning, more rain is expected in the afternoon. The weather in Mumbai has been cloudy since early morning and the humidity has been high of up to 90%. A direct flow of moisture laden southwesterly winds from the Arabian Sea, after the Cyclone Nanauk fizzled, is further making conditions favorable for more rain in Mumbai. Till 8:30 am on Sunday, Mumbai had received heavy monsoon showers of up to 15 mm at Santacruz station and 21 mm at Colaba. Latest satellite and radar images further show cells of cumulonimbus clouds (thunder clouds) are already present around Mumbai which could soon become more intense and head towards Mumbai, giving rain anytime today. “According to Skymet, heavy showers are expected in Mumbai on Monday as well. The monsoon current which was getting disrupted by Cyclone Nanauk has now started to revive, resulting in influx of moist winds from the Arabian Sea. Nanauk has become insignificant and is currently seen as a trough along the coast of Oman”, says meteorologist, Samar Chaudhury. Rain in Maharashtra, Gujarat & Goa So far, other than Mumbai, interiors of Maharashtra and parts of South Gujarat are seen getting drenched in good amounts of rain, completely abating the prolonged heat wave in Vidarbha and adjoining region in the last few weeks. From Saturday 8 am to Sunday 8 am rainfall figures in Maharashtra were: Ratnagiri 46 mm,  Mahabaleshwar 26 mm, Chandrapur 10 mm, Gondia 11 mm, Harnai 21 mm, Nagpur 8 mm, Nashik 2 mm, Sanghli 13 mm, Satara 2 mm, Dahanu and Parbhani 1 mm. Pune, lying on the leeward side of the Western Ghats received only traces of rain. Rainfall occurred in most parts of Gujarat but was heavier in the southern coastal parts. Porbandar 45 mm, Amreli 8.4 mm, Veraval 4 mm, Surat 2 mm, Dwarka and Bhavnagar 1.2 mm, Naliya, Rajkot and Okha 1 mm. Further, heavy rain is being reported from Goa too, where  67 mm of rain occurred in the last 24 hours. Goa is currently experiencing higher humidity of 99% . A reading of 100% relative humidity means that the air is totally saturated with water vapour and cannot hold any more moisture, creating the possibility of rain.
