Mumbai has witnessed one of the rainiest July, this season. After having large deficit of 30% rainfall in June, the city has clocked more than double the normal rainfall in July. Against the monthly normal of 840.6mm, the airport observatory at Santacruz has recorded 1703.7mm, the second all time highest in the history, since 1951 . The all time high July rainfall of 1768mm was recorded last year, surpassing the earlier highest of 1468.5mm in 2014.
July is the rainiest month for Mumbai and it has repeatedly crossed four digit mark of 1000mm. Going by Mumbai standards, July 2024 came very close to the all time record and missed the mark by about 60mm. Actually, Mumbai has not rained much over the last 5 days. Rainfall has generally been light and a total of 45 mm was recorded during this period.
The off-shore monsoon trough is not very active along the Konkan coast. However, there is shear zone, oriented east-west along 20°N. Under the influence of these systems, light to moderate rainfall is likely over the next 2 days. Presently, a cyclonic circulation is marked over Jharkhand and West Bengal. This will move westward and come closer to southwest Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Maharashtra and Rajasthan on 02ndAugust 2024. Fresh surge is likely to build up along the Konkan coast. Rainfall activity will pick up on the weekend. Moderate rains with isolated heavy spells are likely on 03rd and 04thAug. Rainfall may not be heavy enough to disrupt the routine life. Still, the intensity and spread will be large on 04thAug, Sunday.
