Mumbai records lowest day maximum since 2014, day and night temperatures to settle below normal

This year, Mumbai has been performing quite well in terms of winters. In fact, January is that month when Mumbaikars actually wait for mercury to drop so that they can slay their winter outfits. Fortunately winters this year had given cool and pleasant nights not only once but on multiple occasions.

The trend of recording low minimums started around December 27, when minimums over Santa Cruz had dropped to 12.4℃. Likewise, Colaba witnessed its lowest minimum of the season at 17℃ on the same day. However, then for some time, mercury played a rise and fall game, but now looking at the current scenario, it seems like mercury will maintain some stability in recording below normal minimums as well maximums at least for some time.

At present, both maximums as well minimums of Mumbai are below normal, wherein maximum is below by 3℃ while minimums by 2℃. Also this period is being witnessed as ‘peak’ in terms of winters for Mumbai. On January 23, both the observatories of Mumbai had recorded lowest maximum temperature of the January month, wherein maximum over Colaba observatory was reported at 27℃, while 27.2℃ over Santa Cruz observatory.

In fact, these are the lowest maximum temperatures that have been recorded after 2014. It was way back on January 12 in 2014, when the maximum had dropped to 26℃. If we compare this figure with that of current, then we can say that Mumbai has somehow tried to nail 2014’s record in terms of recording low maximum.

Talking about minimums, then these have been dropped notably over Santa Cruz and now are settling at 15℃. Similarly, minimums over Colaba have dropped by 3.4℃ and have come down to 17.6℃. In fact, the sudden drop in day and night temperatures has proven to be a huge relief for Mumbaikars that have been witnessing high maximums as well as humid weather since quite some time now. All thanks to cold winds from north directions. These winds are the results of heavy snowfall over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh as well as Uttarakhand.

Further, we expect these winds to continue over the city until January 28, due to which minimums would settle in the similar range only. As a result, cool and pleasant nights will persist for the next three or four days. However, we expect day maximums to rise by couple of degrees in the coming days. But, this rise will not be significant enough so as to bring a major change in the weather and the city would continue with wintry conditions for at least some days.
