Mumbai Monsoon had made late entry this year, but had arrived with a bang. Within two days of Monsoon making onset, rains had started lashing Mumbai, which got vigorous on June 28.
Mumbai has recorded extremely heavy rains to the tune of 217 mm in span of last 21 hours from 8:30 am on Friday. At present also, light to moderate rains are going on over the city.
According to weathermen, Mumbai rains are in no mood to relent for at least next 24 hours. Heavy to very heavy rains would continue to lash entire city on Saturday. Intense clouding has been engulfing entire Mumbai and as the day progresses, rains would intensify.
The city is already battling flooding, with most streets inundated, bringing life to halt. So far in June, Mumbai has recorded 404 mm of rains against the average of 493 mm. Though there is just one day left in the month, but looking at the trend, Mumbai would be able to achieve the target which once seemed beyond the reach.
Some relief from the ongoing heavy rains are expected Sunday onwards, as intensity would start reducing. However, light to moderate rains would still continue.
The off-shore trough along the West Coast and the cyclonic circulation over east-central Arabian Sea have kept the Monsoon active to vigorous over Mumbai and near by coastal areas of Konkan region.
As per weathermen, rains are here to stay. We can expect drastic decrease in rain from Sunday but on and off rains would continue till July 3. Thereafter, a low pressure area which is developing in Bay of Bengal would travel to Maharashtra via Central India in the coming days. This would once again revive Mumbai rains.
