After an extra ordinary June, Mumbai rains continued to give star performance in the month of July as well. So much so that the city surpassed its monthly target of 840 mm in the first 10 days only. However, it did not even stop there and Mumbai went on recording more heavy spells thereafter. As a result, the city has even exceeded 1000-mm mark.

Till July 16, the maximum city has recorded whopping 1025 mm of rain. Although 4-digit rainfall is nothing new to Mumbai, but this time, it happened after four years. Last time when Mumbai had seen four digit rainfall was in July 2014 to the tune of 1468 mm, which also happens to be all-time high rainfall.

This year as well, weathermen are keeping their fingers crossed as Mumbai rains are slowly inching towards the mark and setting a new record. According to Skymet Weather, we have just entered into the second half of the month and have good 15 days in hand. Weather models are also indicating towards more rains of moderate to heavy intensity in coming days. Past 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday also recorded 95 mm of rain.

Mumbai needs just 443 mm of rains more to make a new record, which is not a very big deal for the city during this month. With active Monsoon conditions, Mumbai rains have tendency to fire for days together. Last week only saw rains taking a vigorous turn and city recorded 3-digit rains for five consecutive days, giving 551 mm of rain in that short time alone.

As per weathermen, the off-shore trough along the West Coast and a cyclonic circulation over South Coastal Gujarat would continue to give good rains with few heavy spells for another 24 hours over Mumbai, Thereafter, rains may reduce but sporadic rains would continue till July 23.

However, the break would be a brief as another system is brewing in Central Bay of Bengal, which is most likely to move inland in westerly direction through Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha region. This would infuse fresh surge of Monsoon and would also activate the off-shore trough again. It would mark the return of heavy rains again over the city.

This year, Southwest Monsoon entered Mumbai as per scheduled date and since then, heavy to extremely heavy rains have been enduring over the city with short breaks of 4 to 5 days.
