Mumbai rains commence as Cyclone Ockhi nears

Updated at 7:00 PM, Dec 4, 2017: As reiterated by Skymet Weather, Mumbai rains have finally commenced, all thanks to very severe cyclonic storm Ockhi. The system has been gradually moving closer to the Indian coast.

The peripherals of the system have being giving intense clouding over the city since late afternoon, with rains finally making appearance by evening.

According to Skymet Weather, Ockhi is seen over east-central Arabian Sea and is centered at Latitude 14.2°N and Longitude 69°E, about 590 km southwest of Mumbai and 770 km south­southwest of Surat.

Weather models are indicating that system would most likely continue to move in north­northeast direction and weaken gradually. Ockhi is likely to cross the coast of South Gujarat and adjoining North Maharashtra near Surat as a deep depression or depression by the night of December 5.

In wake of this, light rains are likely over many parts of Mumbai tonight. Intensity of rains will increase by Tuesday morning, wherein Mumbai could see light to moderate showers.

Authorities have already declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Tuesday to avoid any untoward incidence.

Published on Dec 4, 2017: Mumbai rains have remained far away, and the city has not recorded any rains for a long time now. In fact, the city has been witnessing dry weather conditions for more than a month now. Not only this, the city of dreams has been witnessing warm weather conditions and residents have been wanting to observe pleasant weather.

It seems like their prayers have been heard and the city is all set to witness a few spells of rain. Usually, Mumbai does not witness much rains during this period. Last year, at this time, the weather had remained dry since the month of October.

Starting tonight, Mumbai rains are likely to commence. All thanks to the very severe cyclone Ockhi which had formed in Bay and has moved towards Arabian Sea. Even tomorrow, Mumbai is expected to witness light to moderate showers on December 5.

As far as the wind conditions are concerned, strong surface winds are expected to blow over the region with the speed of 40 kmph gusting up to 60 kmph. Thus, fishermen should suspend fishing activities for some time now.

Currently, Ockhi is 600 km north northwest of Amini Divi, 670 km south southwest of Mumbai and 850 km South southwest of Surat.

This system will now move in a north northeastward direction, weakening gradually and cross South Gujarat and adjoining North Maharashtra coast by midnight hours. After tomorrow, rainfall activity over Mumbai and adjoining areas of Maharashtra will reduce and dry weather will once again takeover.

Due to these rains, temperatures in the city of Mumbai will also witness a drop resulting in pleasant weather conditions.
