Mumbai rains to arrive with Monsoon knocking the door

June 1, 2018 9:30 AM |

mumbai-rainsMumbai has been battling warm and humid weather for quite long now. But there is nothing new for Mumbaikars during this time of the year. But now it’s time for the famous Mumbai rains to make an appearance.

Southwest Monsoon 2018 has made an early onset over Kerala on May 28. Thereafter, the Monsoon has been making steady progress and covered parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu on May 30. It has now started its journey ahead towards Maharashtra.

According to Skymet Weather, the well-marked low pressure area that had developed in Southeast Arabian Sea off Kerala and Karnataka has given extremely heavy rainfall over Karnataka and parts of Konkan & Goa during the last 24 hours.
Nevertheless, the system has become less marked over the same region. Thus, weather of Mumbai remained dry.

Although easterly winds are blowing over the region, but Mumbai will have to wait for some more days to witness any significant pre-Monsoon activity for at least next 3 days. However, light drizzle cannot be ruled out till then. These showers would not have any impact on temperatures and weather would remain warm with humid.

Weathermen predict that pre-Monsoon showers are likely to commence around June 3 and spot rain and thundershowers would continue till June 5. Meanwhile, a cyclonic circulation is likely to form over westcentral Bay of Bengal which would move inland and gradually reach Maharashtra by June 6.

As the system nears, the intensity of rains would increase over Mumbai significantly during that time. We expect heavy downpour over Mumbai between June 7 and June 9. In fact, weather models are indicating that these rains would be heavy to very heavy in few locations of the city and rainfall may cross 100 mm-mark. These heavy rains would mark the onset of Mumbai Monsoon.

Pre-Monsoon rains and onset of Monsoon in Mumbai

Monsoon rains are always preceded by pre-Monsoon activities of varying intensity. Unlike rest of the country, Mumbai hardly gets to see prolonged spell of Pre-Monsoon rains and thundershowers.

While most of the places start witnessing pre-Monsoon activities as early as March, Mumbai generally remains dry till mid-May. In fact, there are very few instances when the entertainment capital would have seen any good rains in pre-Monsoon season.

It is only in the latter half of May, when conditions start changing gradually. But even then, intensity of showers remained confined to light to drizzle only. However, with the beginning of the June, these showers start picking up pace as the Monsoon nears. The normal date of onset of Monsoon in Mumba is June 10.

We are now in the similar phase, wherein in Monsoon is nearing and weather conditions are getting favourable for some pre-Monsoon showers.
