Mumbai rains take baby steps towards daunting target

June 22, 2016 8:49 AM | Skymet Weather Team

After the soft onset of Monsoon 2016 on June 20, parched Mumbai recorded three-digit rainfall on the first day itself. Santa Cruz Observatory recorded 107 mm of rain on Tuesday morning, while Colaba Observatory received 110 mm.

Not only this, Mumbai continued to witness good rains throughout the day as well. With this, the Santa Cruz Observatory has recorded 187 mm of rain till June 21and 117 mm at Colaba.

However, the city is far behind its monthly average rainfall of whopping 523 mm. As of today, the city is rain deficient by 146.9%.

But with Monsoon gathering pace, Mumbai has started its journey of rain towards achieving the daunting target set in front of it. We can expect these on and off rain and thundershowers to continue in the coming days, predicts Skymet Weather.

According to weathermen, the city is known for large variations in the rains. Mumbai rains are largely dependent on the kind of Monsoon onset along with its time of arrival. This time, onset of Monsoon was delayed by good 10 days and that too it arrived softly. Due to this, number of rainy days have also reduced, making the chances to achieve the target bleak.

However, Mumbai is known for heavy rains for successive days and with 8-9 days in hand, the city cannot leave the hope.

Mumbai records 96% of rains during Southwest Monsoon

The four-month long Monsoon season that spans from June till September is the rainiest period for the city in the year.

Mumbai records total of 2165 mm of rain in these four months itself, accounting to 96 % of the annual rainfall of 2258 mm.
To be precise, July is the rainiest month with monthly average of 800 mm of rains, followed by June and August at 523.1 mm and 529.7 mm, respectively.
