Mumbai rains displayed a poor performance during the first few days of June. In fact, the maximum city received 43 mm of rain during the first fifteen days of June. Monsoon made an onset over Mumbai on June 20, about ten days late.
Since then, Mumbai rains have picked up pace resulting in very heavy rains over the city on various occasions. In fact, Mumbai has finally surpassed its monthly rains with three more days to go. Between 8:30 am and 2:30 pm today, Santa Cruz observatory in Mumbai recorded 33 mm of rain taking the monthly rainfall figures to 531 mm.
During the last few days, both Santa Cruz and Colaba observatories have recorded three digit rain twice. So much so that the city easily recovered the rainfall deficit of the first fortnight quite quickly. In fact, conditions are favourable for more rains over the maximum city.
Now, with three days left in June, Mumbai may far exceed its monthly normal rains as the city may receive heavy to very heavy rains. Two Monsoon systems are currently in both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, the one in the Bay is likely to move inland and give heavy rains over many parts including Mumbai. The off shore trough is also active over the West Coast which will further enhance the rains over Mumbai.
Typical heavy Mumbai rains may throw life out of gear in the coming days. The maximum city may receive three digit rain which is likely to wreak havoc over day to day life of Mumbaikars.
