Mumbai rains failed to display a superb performance during the first few days. Southwest Monsoon also made an onset over the maximum city on June 20, about ten days later than its scheduled arrival. Until a few days ago, it seemed like Mumbai would fail to achieve its massive monthly rainfall target.
However, the tides have taken a fortunate turn as Mumbai rains have finally picked up pace. The city has recorded three digit rains on two occasions since June 20. Also, during the last seven days, Mumbai has recorded rains in double digit al throughout barring a day when 2.8 mm rainfall was received.
During the last 21 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, the city recorded 33 mm of rain. These rains can be attributed to the cyclonic circulation which is in close proximity of Mumbai. Also, the off shore Monsoon trough has become more active and is giving more rain over Mumbai.
The cyclonic circulation in the Bay of Bengal is also expected to move inland. This system is also expected to be in close proximity of the maximum city, pounding more rains. The combined effect of both the systems is expected to result in more three digit rains over Mumbai.
So far Mumbai has recorded 498 mm of rain against its monthly average of 523.1 mm of rain. With about three more days left in June and two Monsoon systems to give rain over the region, there are fair chances of Mumbai exceeding its monthly average rainfall.
Mumbai continues to receive rain during the morning hours as well. In fact, the city is likely to receive more rains during the next 24 hours. Overcast sky conditions will prevail over the city and weather conditions will remain pleasant.
