Mumbai Rains: Hat-trick of the century rainfall, heavy downpour to continue over Mumbai and suburbs

Mumbai continues to be lashed with heavy to very heavy rains for the last 4 days. Base station Santacruz recorded 107mm in 24 hours ending 8.30 am today. Mumbai completes a hat trick of century rainfall by registering 3 digits 24 hours rainfall on 10th June (231mm), 11th June (107mm) and 12th June (107mm). Heavy rains continue and are likely to go on for the next 3 days for Mumbai and suburbs with short breaks in between.

Mumbai had a resounding onset of monsoon on 09th June and no let-up thereafter. Mumbai has measured a total of 641.3mm rainfall so far, thereby surpassing its monthly normal of 493.1mm. Over 500mm of rains have been dumped over Mumbai in the last 4 days. Looks like Mumbai rains is heading for an all-time record of June and overtake its earlier milestone of 1106.7mm achieved in June 2015.

The western arm of the monsoon from the Arabian Sea remains strong, thronging the Konkan coast with speeding westerlies. The courtesy low-pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal and coastal parts, monsoon stream is going to sustain strength for the next 3-4 days. Mumbai and suburbs will continue to be trounced with intermittent rain and thundershowers with short breaks in between. Weather activity is likely to be more intense during late night and early morning hours.

Coastal and low-lying areas of Mumbai and suburbs will face waterlogging and inundation. Rail, road, and air traffic may get cramped and communication and commuting be rather difficult. Utmost precautions are adopted to safeguard life and assets.
