Mumbai is heading for one of the rainiest July, this season. The record observatory at Santacruz has already amassed over 1500mm of rainfall. There is a strong likelihood of heavy spells of monsoon showers in the remaining days of the month. The financial capital of the country may set a new record for the rainiest month of July.
July has a normal 840.6mm rainfall. Since 2009, the airport observatory has breached the 1000mm mark nine times. The highest and an all-time record was established last year when the city gathered a huge total of 1768mm of rainfall. With over 1500mm of rainfall in the kitty and still about a week to go of active monsoon conditions in this month, there is a large probability of setting a new threshold.
Heavy rainfall is likely from the 25th to the 27th of July, with a slight tone down on the 28th and 29th of July. The fag end of July will again catch with heavy rains on 30th and 31st July. In continuation, the intense rains will roll over to the start of next month, as well. Respite, if at all, is expected no earlier than 03rd August 2024.
The monsoon stream is rather strong along the coastline of Konkan. Westerly winds from the Arabian Sea are striking headstrong the Mumbai coastline. A series of monsoon systems are forming over the Bay of Bengal and tracking across the central parts. These are the triggers for accentuating the monsoon surge. Heavy downpour over Mumbai and suburbs is likely on most days of July, except 28th&29thJuly. The rains will be adequate enough to derail the routine activities, resulting in hardships for Mumbaikars.
