The wait for the monsoon rains is finally over. The city and its suburbs have already begun experiencing the refreshing showers, with the Santacruz observatory recording 20 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.
Favourable weather systems are contributing to this early arrival. A cyclonic circulation over Saurashtra and Kutch, along with a trough extending from the Maharashtra coast to Kerala, are pulling in monsoon currents. This will lead to increased rainfall activity across Mumbai, Pune, and surrounding districts.
The forecast for the next 24-48 hours predicts heavy to very heavy downpours over South Konkan, Goa, South Madhya Maharashtra, and even the North Karnataka coast. However, such heavy rainfall can also lead to waterlogging and flash floods in these areas. With the official arrival of the monsoon in Mumbai, temperatures are expected to take a welcome dip, providing much-needed relief from the recent hot weather conditions.
While heavy monsoon rains are a vital part of the season, they can sometimes cause issues in July and August. Widespread waterlogging and flash floods can become a concern during these peak months. Here at Skymet, we'll be keeping a close eye on such weather developments and providing timely updates to help Mumbaikars stay prepared.
