Mumbai has witnessed extremely heavy rain during last 72 hours. The Santa Cruz observatory has recorded 604 mm of rain in last three days, surpassing the monthly average rainfall of 523 mm.
Moderate to heavy spells of rain will continue over Mumbai during next two to three days but these will not be as intense as it was.
According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, June, July and August are the rainiest months for Mumbai. However, such torrential rains are very rare.

The reason behind the intense weather activity was the multiple weather systems. An off-shore trough along the West Coast had kept the monsoon active over Maharashtra coast. Besides this, a low pressure area in north-east Arabian Sea, then a cyclonic circulation, increased the Monsoon surge over Maharashtra in form of strong southwesterly winds.
However, the low pressure area will now move westwards, away from the Indian coast but off-shore trough will continue to persist. This will decrease the Monsoon surge leading to reduction in intensity of rain over the West Coast including Mumbai.
