Mumbai crosses monthly average, heavy rain to continue for now

August 28, 2016 11:37 AM | Skymet Weather Team

Throughout the month of August mainly dry weather persisted over Mumbai with some light showers here and there. Though off-shore trough along the Maharashtra & Karnataka coast remained feeble but on and off showers were observed over Konkan & Goa but Mumbai remained almost dry.

Now a cyclonic circulation which is over Southwest Rajasthan, has activated the Monsoon surge over Konkan & Goa including Mumbai. This is the sole reason that heavy to very heavy rain has commenced over many districts of Coastal Maharashtra including Mumbai.

The day before yesterday, Santa Cruz observatory in Mumbai recorded 106 mm of rains; another 52 mm rain was recorded by the observatory in last 24 hours.

Moderate to heavy showers are continuing over many parts of the city and we expect the good rain to continue with some minimal breaks in between for another 24 hours. By tomorrow the weather system over Southeast Rajasthan is expected to move in north direction & the monsoon surge over coastal Maharashtra will decrease.

This will lead to significant decrease in rain activity over the region.

As of now Mumbai has surpassed its monthly average of 529.7 mm, and so far 562 mm of rain has occurred over Santa Cruz observatory in this month. We expect good rain and thundershowers to continue over the city, by the end of the month.
