Southwest monsoon had a delayed onset over the city of Mumbai and finally made an entrance on June 25 which is about two weeks later than its usual arrival of June 11. What was interesting was that on the same day, Monsoon made an early arrival over Delhi and the NCR region by two days.
The last time something like this happened was in the year 1961 on June 21, which means such a situation has occurred after 62 years. When it comes to the simultaneous arrival of Monsoon over both the national as well as commercial capital of India, it has always been due to the late arrival in Mumbai.
The monsoon in Mumbai was delayed due to Cyclone Biparjoy while the Bay of Bengal low-pressure area pushed Monsoon early for Delhi. It has been noted that the West Bay of Bengal systems push Monsoon advancement which has happened in this case. Meanwhile, the Arabian Sea systems corrupt the Monsoon stream and cause delayed and sluggish onsets.
