Chennai has been receiving good rains for the last 2 days. In fact, other parts of Tamil Nadu also witnessed good rains. In a span of 24 hours, from 8.30 am on Saturday, Chennai recorded 33 mm of rainfall.

According to Skymet Weather, multiple weather systems are affecting the weather over Tamil Nadu. A cyclonic circulation is brewing up over Northwest Bay of Bengal. This could intensify into a low pressure area in another 2 days. A feeble trough is extending from this system up to North Tamil Nadu coast.

Besides, we can see another cyclonic circulation persisting over Lakshadweep and Maldives areas. All these weather systems are responsible for moderate rains over the state, specially Chennai. The rainy spell is likely to continue for at least 24 hours.

So far this season Tamil Nadu has received normal rains to the tune of 6%. And, looks like Tamil Nadu will end up with normal rains at the end of the Monsoon season as well.

As of September 4, the Meenambakkam observatory has witnessed 59.2 mm of rainfall while Nungambakkam has received 75.9 mm of total rainfall.

The main rainy season for Chennai is the Northeast Monsoon season. Therefore, we could say that this is just the beginning for Chennai rains as 60% of the annual rains are witnessed from October to December. Considering the Chennai deluge last year, we hope that the civic authorities will be better prepared this time.
