Fog remains shallow in most parts of the country

For the last few days weather in most parts of the country including Delhi has been clear. Though some areas have been experiencing dense to very dense fog, the spread is limited. For example, the Palam airport early Monday morning observed very dense fog with visibility dropping to 100 meters but other areas like Dwarka, Laxminagar, Vikaspuri and Lajpatnagar witnessed shallow fog. In Punjab Amritsar also observed fairly clear conditions with visibility settling at 400 meters.

In the eastern parts of the country Gorakpur in Uttar Pradesh again witnessed very dense fog today morning with visibility coming down to nil. This pocket has been the worst hit by fog this winter. Fog has been a very regular feature here with maximum number of foggy days being recorded. Other places like Lucknow saw good weather conditions as visibility was recorded at 700 meters. Almost clear weather was observed in Agra too, with visibility settling at 800 meters. However, Siliguri in West Bengal, which is also close to the northeastern part of the country and lies in the foothills experienced very dense fog with visibility coming down to nil.

In Northeast India the weather conditions were fairly clear. Guwahati, the capital of Assam observed shallow fog with visibility of 800 meters.

Down south, Chennai once again observed foggy conditions, a highly unusual feature for the city. The visibility due to very dense fog in Chennai had come down to 50 meters today. On Monday too, Chennai had observed very dense fog.

Meanwhile, seven flights were reported to be cancelled in Delhi, while the arrival and departure of 16 flights were delayed. Rail traffic was also hit hard with Nandankanan express running late by 11 hrs. Amritsar Jaynagar express is 10 hrs late, Saryuyamuna express 10 hrs, Neelanchal express 13 hrs, Poorvottar SKS express 5 hrs and Tamil Nadu express 5 hrs.
