March 10, 2014 12:59 PM |

Just as we predicted, rain lashed Delhi today morning, bothering several commuters who were stuck in long traffic snarls from 9 am onwards, due to waterlogged roads. According to the latest weather update by Skymet’s Meteorological Division in India, rain in Delhi might have stopped for the time being but will begin again in the evening, troubling those heading home from work.

“Yesterday, we had given a weather alert for rain in Delhi today morning. Last night too we received some good showers accompanied with strong winds (around 30 kmph) blowing in Delhi and Haryana due to rapid formation of thunder clouds or cumulonimbus clouds”, says G.P Sharma, of Skymet’s Meteorological Division.

“Rain in Delhi and the adjoining states has stopped for some time, which will allow the sun to appear for a brief period and raise the maximum temperatures. This rise in temperature could result in rain once again in the evening and night”, added the senior meteorologist.

Here’s a look at some of the rain figures in Delhi and NCR from last night till 8:30 am today:

Palam – 1.8 mm, Safdurjung – 0.8 mm, Lodhi Road – 1.2 mm, Pusa Road - 2 mm, Hindon – 0.3 mm, Ridge – traces of rain, Akshardham – 1 mm, Hisar – 4 mm, Meerut – 3 mm, Bhiwani – 4 mm, Gurgaon – 1 mm, Ayanagar – 1 mm, Sadalpur – 3 mm, Fatehabad – 2 mm, Aligarh – 1.3 mm and Churu – traces of rain.

Meanwhile, rain and snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir has also been quite heavy in the last 24 hours, with many cities recording rain/snow between 30 mm to 40 mm. While Srinagar recorded 46.3 mm, Pahalgam and Gulmarg recorded 47 mm and 41 mm of rain respectively.

Further forecasts show, snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir and rain in Delhi and North India, i.e. Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan will occur tonight and will continue till the 12th of March.

Skymet has been reiterating the possibility of a hailstorm in entire North and Northwest India before the rain belt shifts to Uttar Pradesh and parts of Madhya Pradesh tomorrow.

“As of now, the capital is expected to witness a stronger spell of rain tomorrow. The day will begin with morning showers”, added G.P Sharma, of Skymet’s Meteorological Division.
