More than 80000 people affected by Assam floods

Incessant Monsoon rains have taken a toll on the people in the northeastern state of Assam. Heavy rains in the catchment areas of several districts in the state have caused rivers to overflow.

The four districts to bear the brunt of heavy rainfall, triggering floods, include Dhemaji, Nagaon, Jorhat and Lakhimpur.

According to media reports more than 80,000 people have been affected by flooding rains. Out of them, about 68,000 persons have been affected in the district of Lakhimpur itself.

The Brahmaputra River has been flowing above the danger level in Jorhat and Tezpur.

Approximately 4,000 people have also been left homeless in Majuli Island of the Jorhat district. Here about 60 villages have been flooded by the Brahmaputra River.

Till July 4, about 57000 people were affected by floods in Assam.

Monsoon is also active in the states of Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh as of now. Monsoon is at its peak now and the cumulative rainfall deficiency across the country is rapidly decreasing.
