Scattered light rains continued to drench several parts of Tamil Nadu including the state capital of Chennai during the last 24 hours. In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Kancheepuram recorded of 40 mm of rain, Vellore 36 mm, Villupuram 20 mm, and Tiruvannamalai 10 mm.
In Chennai, Nungambakkam Observatory recorded 6 mm of rain while Minambakkam received 2 mm.
Moreover, weather conditions remain favourable for rains to continue for another 24 to 48 hours, predicts Skymet Weather.
The ongoing rainy spell can be attributed to several weather systems affecting Tamil Nadu. A trough is seen extending from the cyclonic circulation persisting over Northwest Bay of Bengal up to Tamil Nadu coast.
Meanwhile, another cyclonic circulation is prevailing over east-central Arabian Sea off the South Konkan and Karnataka coast. All the weather systems combined together resulted in rains and thundershowers of varied intensity.
Further, with systems continuing to sustain their strength, these rains and thundershowers will continue over North Tamil Nadu including Chennai.
Thereafter, rain belt will shift towards South Tamil Nadu and light to moderate rains may lash the southern parts of the state for subsequent two to three days.
According to Skymet Weather, Northeast Monsoon has commenced over the region but till now no significant rains have occurred over the state.
Chennai usually witnesses onset of Northeast Monsoon by the second or third week of October, wherein the city records more than 60% of its annual rainfall.
The three-month long Northeast Monsoon affects Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Interior Karnataka.
