The month of July is the rainiest Southwest Monsoon month for the state of Kerala followed by the month of June. However, rains start reducing in the other two subsequent months of August and September.
Monsoon made a timely arrival over the state of Kerala, in fact, a day advance of its scheduled time and since then the state has been recording some on and off rains. In fact, the month of June ended on a surplus note with 15% excess rains.
Though, after that, the first week of July went unfortunate that consumed the surplus level and the week ended on a deficit note of 5%. The rains thereafter once again revived and since July 8, Kerala has been recording some exceptionally good rains that even led to local flooding at a few occasions in parts. Due to these rains, the second week concluded at 21% excess rains.

On the past day also, Kerala observed widespread rains varying from moderate to heavy and isolated very heavy. In the last 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Wednesday, Kannur recorded 103 mm of rains, Vadakara 127 mm, Kudulu 83 mm, Hosdurg 75 mm, Kozhikode 66 mm, Alappuzha 44 mm, Kochi 39 mm, and Karipur witnessed 37 mm of rains.
If we take a look at the percentage of rainfall that Kerala recorded on daily basis, the rains were intense on July 16 which ended at 300% in excess, which dipped the next day and on July 17, it was 74% rain surplus. However, by July 18, the rains increased again, and the day ended at 182% surplus.
As per Skymet Weather, the offshore trough is extending from Karnataka to Kerala coast. In the wake of this, rains would increase, and some more heavy showers may continue for the next 24-48 hours. This would kelp the state to restore its surplus status.
However, these rains would remain confined mainly to North and central Kerala but would be on a reducing note over the southern part of the state. Hence, no relief can be anticipated from the ongoing flooding situation as rains would be continuous.
