On and off Monsoon rains have been occurring over the state of West Bengal that has been able to keep the temperatures under check. Barring a few locations, otherwise, the day temperatures of most pockets have remained in the lower 30’s.
On the last day also, widespread rains occurred over almost the entire state. The intensity though varied from light to moderate.
In the last 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Wednesday, Bankura recorded 33 mm of rains, Kolkata 27 mm, Berhampore 24 mm, Diamond Harbour 22 mm, Purulia 20 mm, Jalpaiguri 18 mm, Midnapore 14 mm, Burdwan 7 mm, Darjeeling 5 mm and Ulberia recorded 4 mm of rains.
As per Skymet Weather, the reason for these rains can be associated with the shift of the eastern arm of the Axis of Monsoon trough towards North. Until now, this trough was persisting over Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

However, now, there are two branches of the eastern end of the Axis of Monsoon trough, one running from Patna to Assam across Malda and another branch running from Patna to northeast Bay of Bengal across Kolkata.

As both the branches are extending via some districts of West Bengal, therefore, we expect light to moderate with few heavy spells to continue over entire West Bengal. However, the intensity of rains, in comparison with the northern portion of the state would be more over the southern half of West Bengal.
The capital city, Kolkata may also receive some good rains. These light to moderate showers are expected to continue until the month end. Rains are expected to start reducing August 2 onwards.
However, until then, the state would have received sufficient rains so as to curb the deficiency levels of the state. At present, West Bengal is rain deficient by 23%.
