The rainy saga for the state of Maharashtra is in no hurry to end so soon. The state has been constantly witnessing moderate to heavy rains and the rainy episode continued on the last day as well.
Almost the entire state was experiencing a good amount of rainfall, however, the intensity of these showers varied from one region to the other. The most amount of rains were witnessed by Vidarbha and South Madhya Maharashtra region wherein the intensity ranged from moderate to isolated heavy rains.
On the other hand, rains over Konkan reduced in comparison with the day before rains and the intensity remained light to moderate. Parts of Marathwada also witnessed moderate with isolated heavy showers.
As per Skymet Weather, a series of weather systems were responsible for these heavy showers. Firstly, the cyclonic circulation which is persisting over South Gujarat region gave good rains over parts of North Konkan region. The offshore trough is also running from South Konkan to Kerala coast and is enhancing rain activities over South Konkan and adjoining Madhya Maharashtra region.

In addition to this, a well-marked low-pressure area is also over interior Odisha and can be attributed in giving good rains over Vidarbha and Marathwada.

Spanning from the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Monday, Kolhapur recorded the most rains to the tune of 93 mm, Gondia 74 mm, Parbhani 61 mm, Nashik 57 mm, Pune 47 mm, Satara 43 mm, Bramhapuri 39 mm, Mumbai 38 mm, Chandrapur 28 mm, Sangli 22 mm, Nagpur 24 mm, Dahanu 17 mm, Jalgaon 16 mm, and Washim recorded 15 mm of rains.
It is all due to these continuous good spells that all the divisions of the state are at present rain surplus. As on July 16, Konkan is the most rainfall surplus region with 53% excess rains, followed by Vidarbha which is 39% rain surplus, Madhya Maharashtra 23% rain surplus and Marathwada which is in excess of rains by 17%.
As of now, we expect light to moderate rains with one or two heavy spells to continue over Konkan and adjoining parts of Madhya Maharashtra. In addition to this, Vidarbha would also receive good rains for another 24 hours. Thereafter, rains would reduce over Marathwada, but isolated light rains would continue.
At this stage, let us see the impact of this weather on the agriculture belt of Maharashtra:
In Konkan and South Madhya Maharashtra, farmers are suggested to complete transplanting 20-25 days old Paddy seedlings and to drain out excess water from paddy fields by maintaining 2-3 cm of water level.
In Vidarbha, Marathwada and North Maharashtra region, farmers are recommended to complete the sowing of Cotton, Soybean, Maize, Bajra, Jowar, and pulses. Farmers are also advised to undertake intercultural operations in 25-30 days old cotton, Soybean and Maize crop and to apply fertilizers top dressing to these crops. Farmers should control the sucking pests on cotton by taking proper measures.
