Since last one month, interior districts of Tamil Nadu have been receiving on and off good rains. However, coastal areas including Chennai remained hot and humid.
Now, Chennai is likely to get some breather in form of pre-Monsoon rain and thundershowers for the next two to three days. In fact, the state capital and nearby area are already witnessing light rainfall and thundershower since last two days. In the span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Minabakkam and Nungambakkam, both these observatories have recorded 12 mm of rainfall each.
According to Skymet Weather, these rains can be attributed to a feeble trough extending from North Coastal Tamil Nadu. With this, we may expect the intensity of rainfall to increase over Chennai and Tamil Nadu. Weathermen predict that these rains will continue for at least next 2-3 days.

True to their characteristics, these rain and thundershower activities will usually show up during the late afternoon hours or evening. Today also we may expect the sky to become cloudy, followed by few spells of light rainfall and thundershower activities to occur over Chennai.
Being a rain shadow area, Chennai receives 55.8 mm on an average in June, where as neighbouring state of Kerala and Karnataka record some heavy to very heavy showers. Three digit monthly rains begin over Chennai July onward. However, on and off showers do continue throughout the month of June.
