More rains in Kerala and parts of Karnataka till December 6

December 5, 2018 12:11 PM | Skymet Weather Team

Monsoon rains are once again back over Kerala and Karnataka as many places received light to moderate rains with few heavy sells during the last 24 hours. Alappuzha recorded 40 mm of rain in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, followed by Kochi 16 mm, Mangaluru 7 mm and Bengaluru 5 mm.

In fact, the northern districts of Karnataka have received scattered rains during the last 24 hours. These rains have occurred after a prolonged dry spell.

At present, a cyclonic circulation is persisting over East-central Arabian Sea off Karnataka Coast. A trough is also seen running from South Konkan & Goa to Kerala across Coastal Karnataka.

Due to these weather systems, we expect scattered light to moderate rains to continue over Kerala, Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka. Also, light rains cannot be ruled out over North Interior Karnataka. By December 7, we expect rainfall activity to decrease significantly over most parts of Kerala and Karnataka.

Usually the southern districts of Karnataka as well as Kerala receive on and off rains during the Northeast Monsoon period. These regions get effected by the weather systems forming over Southwest Bay of Bengal and the ones over Southeast Arabian Sea.

However, the northern districts of Karnataka do not get affected by these weather systems which originate in Bay of Bengal or Arabian Sea, as these weather systems fizzle out before reaching this region. The northern districts of Karnataka receive rains due to the formation of a north-south trough which is the case at present.
