During the last 24 hours, light to moderate rain associated with heavy showers have occurred in most places of Northeast India. According to the data available with Skymet, the highest rainfall was recorded in Kohima (Nagaland) at 52 mm, followed by Agartala (Tripura) 21.4 mm, Silchar (Assam) 15.8 mm and Imphal (Manipur) 7.5 mm.

The reason for ongoing rains can be attributed to different weather systems that are prevailing all over India. At present, a Cyclonic Circulation is over Northeast Bihar and adjoining parts of Sub Himalayan West Bengal. An East- West Trough from this system is extending up to Mizoram. Another Trough from the same circulation is extending up to Odisha. In addition to these systems, south westerly winds from the Bay of Bengal are continuously feeding moisture.

As these systems are expected to persist for some more time, rain and thundershowers will continue in many parts of Northeast India. The Seven Sister States consisting of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura will experience good rain and thundershower activities for the coming week.

From agricultural point of view, these rains are very fruitful for Jack fruit and tea crops. This is because these crops need warm and moist atmosphere for their growth and nourishment. Also, ongoing rains are helpful in soil moisture restoration.
