The state of Uttarakhand has been receiving incessant rains for the last couple of days. In fact, several schools are being shut in view of torrential rains being anticipated to continue over the state for another 48 hours.
Numerous districts in both the Kumaon and Garhwal regions of Uttarakhand have been receiving torrential rains for almost the last three weeks. Such incessant rains have caused waterlogging and flooding situation over the state.
Heavy to extremely heavy rains lashed the state on the last day as well with fairly widespread rains occurring over the state. Dehradun, in the last 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Sunday observed the most 125 mm of rains in just 24 hours.
The other stations that had recorded good rains during the similar time frame include Haridwar at 48 mm, Mussorrie 47.5 mm, Nainital 46.3 mm, Tehri 43 mm, Pantnagar 43 mm, Almora 35 mm, Mukteshwar 33 mm, and Champawat recorded 27 mm of rains.
Owing to unceasing rains, the water level of Gori Ganga river, flowing along Pithoragarh district of the state has also raised, imperiling the villages on the river banks.
Moreover, due to the heavy rains, Kedarnath Highway in Chandrapuri has also been closed temporarily on Saturday. The 'Chaar Dhaam Yatra' has also been halted at some places with respect to rains and landslides, thereby creating chaos for the travelers.
The reason for such heavy rains over the state can be attributed with the prevalence of a cyclonic circulation over Northwest Uttar Pradesh and adjoining areas. In addition to this, easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal are also reaching over the state.
As per Skymet Weather, the first four days of the month were poor in terms of rains for the state. However, rains picked up the last day, bringing a slight improvement in the rainfall deficiency. This is explained in the table below:
As of now also, the state can expect some moderate to heavy rains with isolated very heavy in pockets. These rains may worsen the situation further and may aggravate the already flooding situation.
Along with this, incidences of mudslides, landslides, and cloudbursts cannot be ruled out as well. Hence, caution is advised to the travelers before visiting the ‘Devbhoomi’.
