More rains ahead for Punjab and Haryana, relief form heat wave

May 16, 2019 1:29 PM | Skymet Weather Team

Both the states of Punjab and Haryana have received good rains in the pre-Monsoon season so far. Until May 15, Punjab has received normal rainfall with a deficiency of 11% (+/- 19 normal). Haryana fared slightly better than Punjab as it is deficient by just 3%.

Since the last few days, Punjab and Haryana have been receiving thunderstorm and thundershower activities. Hailstorm was also reported at one or two places in both the states.

We are in the month of May, but Western Disturbances continue to affect the Western Himalayas while inducing Cyclonic Circulations over Northern plains. Moreover, moisture feed is coming in from the Arabian Sea with the help of Southwesterly winds. These factors were responsible for the rains and thundershower activities.

More rains ahead

We expect these pre-Monsoon activities to continue for another 24 to 48 hours over both the states. Thereafter, there will be gap of two to three days as the Western Disturbance will move away. Then, another spell of rain and thundershower will affect the states around May 22.

This is when the weather systems like Western Disturbance, induced Cyclonic Circulation and moisture feed from the Arabian Sea will once again resume.

Therefore, we can say that relief from hot weather conditions will continue in Punjab and Haryana for at least next one week or so.
