The city of Chennai does not see a lot of rainfall activity during the southwest monsoon season because the region lies in the rain shadow area. The capital city of Tamil Nadu records more rainfall during the northeast monsoon season.
During the south-west monsoon season, when the monsoon goes weak or is in the brake phase, it is then when Chennai records good rainfall activity. Such has been the situation presently wherein Monsoon is on the weaker side, and rains have been immense for Chennai.
During the last 24 hours, Chennai's Meenambakkam observatory recorded 58 mm of rains. The city has so far recorded 332 mm of rains which is more than doouble the normal rains.
In fact, this month, Southwest monsoon has been on a prolonged break phase and another round of break monsoon period is coming up. Therefore, Chennai will continue to see some light to moderate rains in the coming few days as well.
