On and off rains have been occurring over the Southern Peninsular India. However, the state of Tamil Nadu remained mainly dry but isolated light rain activities have been going on over the interior parts of Tamil Nadu since past few days.

A sudden increase in weather activities over the state of Tamil Nadu was witnessed during the last 24 hours. Moderate to heavy showers occurred over many places during this time.

In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Monday, Salem recorded 71.8 mm of rain, followed by Coonor 23.3 mm, Dharmapuri 11 mm, Kodiakanal 13.9 mm and Tiruchirappalli recorded few traces of rain.

These pre-monsoon activities can be attributed to the wind discontinuity which is seen over Telangana to Interior Tamil Nadu. Moisture feed is also reaching from Arabian Sea as well as Bay of Bengal over the state.

With the weather systems likely to prevail, we expect good rains to continue for at least next 24 hours. Thereafter, intensity of these rains will decrease but isolated light rain or thunderstorm activities are expected continue over interior districts particularly areas adjacent to Nilgiri hills.

However, rains are likely to escape Chennai and nearby areas. The state capital would continue to battle hot and humid weather conditions.
