Kerala

Monsoon 2017 continues to be active over parts of South India. During the last 24 hours, parts of Kerala have witnessed heavy rains, while one or two places recorded very heavy spells. Meanwhile, light to moderate rains have occurred over most of Karnataka.

These rains can be attributed to a cyclonic circulation which is seen persisting over Southeast Arabian Sea off Kerala Coast. In addition to this, a north-south trough is also seen extending from Madhya Maharashtra to Interior Karnataka.

These weather systems are likely to persist for another 24 to 48 hours. Thus, Skymet Weather expect light to moderate rains to occur at many places and one or two places may see heavy rains as well over Karnataka and Kerala.

In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Sunday, Karipur recorded a good 58 mm of rainfall, Madikeri 24 mm, Kochi 18 mm, Chitradurga 13 mm, Mangaluru 13 mm, Kozhikode 10 mm, Kodaikanal 7 mm, Vijayapura 7 mm, Mysuru 3 mm, Alappuzha 2 mm and Palakkad 2 mm.

Morning and nights are expected to be comfortable, while days will be warm and humid over both, Karnataka and Kerala. Day maximums are likely to settle in the range of 32-33 degrees, while minimums will settle between 24-25 degrees.

At present, the state of Kerala is rain deficient by 19 percent. If these good Monsoon showers continue for another 2 to 3 days, then we expect the rain deficiency of Kerala to decrease by a few percent. But any significant improvement in the rainfall activity over the state is not foreseen.

Similar is the case with Karnataka, North Interior Karnataka is rain deficient by 3 percent, while South Interior Karnataka by 4 percent. With more rains in offing, we expect this rain deficiency to disappear from these regions. However, Coastal Karnataka that is at present rain deficient by 21 percent, may see some improvement but rain deficiency will be persist.
