More Monsoon rains in offing for West Bengal

September 6, 2016 12:11 PM |

Rain in West BengalThe Southwest Monsoon remains vigorous over West Bengal, giving heavy to very heavy rains over the eastern state. All thanks to the low pressure area which is marked over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh.

In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Kolkata recorded whopping 159 mm of rain, followed by Canning 88 mm, Asansol 72.4 mm, Bankura 49 mm, Burdwan 41.8 mm, Darjeeling 35.5 mm, Digha 35.2 mm, and Midnapore 31.2 mm.

Now, we can expect similar weather conditions to continue over the state during the next 24 hours as well. According to Skymet Weather, moderate to heavy rains will continue over several parts of West Bengal.

However, intensity of rains will be more over western parts of the state, while rains will start reducing gradually over the coastal parts. This will be on account of the movement of the low pressure area in northwest direction.

As the system will continue to move away from the state, the intensity of rains will also start decreasing but this will happen only after 24 hours.

With this fresh spell of good Monsoon rains, West Bengal is now witnessing above normal rains. As on August 5, the cumulative rainfall surplus for West Bengal stands at 2%. With more rains in offing, we expect the surplus rainfall percentage to increase in coming days.
