After missing its onset date, Monsoon finally arrived inMumbaiwith a bang on June 12. The city observed 82 mm of rain in a span of one day. And the conditions look favourable for more moderate to heavy spells in next 2 to 3 days. The city is currently observing moderate rainfall activity which might pick up further any time soon. An active offshore trough is the main cause for rain in the city.

According to the data available with Skymet, there has been 100 mm of rain in Mumbai so far, which is far less than the monthly average of 523 mm. However, this should not be a cause of concern as three digit rainfall in a day is a common feature during Monsoon in Mumbai. And with chances of good rain in the next couple of days due to the active off shore trough, Mumbai will inch closer to the monthly average. By the end of the month it may touch the monthly rainfall figure as well.

Mumbai enjoys 15 rainy days (rainfall amounts should exceed 2.5 mm on each rainy day) during June. As we enter the month of July the average rainy days become 23, which indicates that Mumbai observes very good rainfall during the Monsoon period. Waterlogging and traffic jams are a very common feature in the city during Monsoon.

The highest amount of rainfall observed in the month of June in last one decade is 1029.8 mm, recorded in 2013. And the highest 24 hour rainfall is 209.6 mm, observed on June 24, 2007.
