More heavy rains to lash Kashmir, Himachal, Uttarakhand; landslide threat looms large

June 29, 2018 6:52 PM | Skymet Weather Team

The Southwest Monsoon arrived with a bang over hills of North India, particularly over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Heavy to very heavy rains have lashed parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, with extremely heavy rains on Thursday. This is the first spell of heavy rains in this season.

These rains had also triggered landslides leading to shutdown of Jammu-Srinagar National Highway on Friday. Not only this, Hindu pilgrimage of Amarnath Yatra was also suspended due to inclement bad weather conditions.

Not only this, these Monsoon rains also led to massive drop in the temperatures by 10-15 degrees and even more at few places.

According to Skymet Weather, we do not expect any relief from the ongoing heavy rains during the next 24 hours as well. Thus, threat of landslides or mudslides looms large.

Although rains would not be extremely heavy as on June 28, but heavy rains would persist over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The intensity of rains would be more on the first two states as compared to last one.

These rains can be attributed to the passage of strong Western Disturbance along with the active Monsoon surge.

In the next 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rain and thundershowers with one or two extremely heavy showers along with lightning strike would occur over Bilaspur, Chamba, Hamirpur, Kangra, Kinnaur, Kullu, Lahul & Spiti, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur, Solan, Una, Almora, Bageshwar, Chamoli, Champawat, Dehradun, Garhwal, Hardwar, Nainital, Pithoragarh, Rudraprayag, Tehri Garhwal, Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarkashi, Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Banihal, Batote, Qazigund, Kupwara, Katra and Jammu.

Any significant improvement can only be seen after 48 hours. However, Uttarakhand would see rains picking up pace July 1 onwards.

With this, we would request all the people travelling to these hilly states to exercise caution.
