More heavy rains in Maharashtra; rice transplantation advisable

July 3, 2018 12:53 PM |

Mumbai-Rains

Heavy to extremely heavy rains lashed the state of Maharashtra on the past day and this was already predicted by Skymet Weather. However, Konkan remained the most rain-affected region followed by Vidarbha.

On the other hand, Monsoon rains remained light to moderate over parts of Madhya Maharashtra, meanwhile, Marathwada remained almost dry.

In fact, the capital city, Mumbai, after almost 7-8 days, once again recorded the famous three-digit rainfall. In the last 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Monday, Mumbai’s Santa Cruz observatory recorded extremely heavy rains to the tune of 131 mm, meanwhile, Colaba observatory recorded 75 mm of rains.

The other districts of the state that recorded some rains during the similar time frame includes Alibag with 87 mm of rains, Harnai 59 mm, Dahanu 57 mm, Vengurla 40 mm, Ratnagiri 23 mm, Wardha 23 mm, Bramhapuri 21 mm, Kolhapur 17 mm, Satara 7 mm, Gondia 3 mm, and Nashik and Pune both recorded 2 mm of light spells.

In the wake of this, we expect, moderate to heavy Monsoon rains to continue over Konkan region for the next few days as well. Vidarbha may also continue with on and off good rains for the next two to three days. Thus, the cities like Thane, Dahanu, Mumbai, Ratnagiri, and Raigad would receive moderate to heavy with isolated very heavy rains.

However, rains would remain subdued over Marathwada as well as Madhya Maharashtra which might have to manage with light to moderate rains. The cities like Nagpur, Gondia, Chandrapur, Amravati, and Wardha may get to witness light to moderate rains. On the other hand, rains would remain light over Nashik, Pune, Satara, Kolhapur.

At this stage, let us see the impact of this weather on the agriculture belt of Maharashtra:

Farmers in Konkan are advised to transplant rice as early as possible. Urea, MOP can be applied in the rice crop which would drain out excess water from the rice field. Before sowing of groundnut, thiram treatment for seed can be given which is useful against wilt disease in groundnut.

For Vidarbha farmers are advised to start sowing of Maize, Sorghum crop. In Madhya Maharashtra, farmers can continue sowing of Kharif crops like Cotton, Tur, and Soybean in areas which received sufficient rain. If there is sufficient rainfall, then farmers should undertake the puddling operation in the rice fields for transplanting.
