Monsoon rains this season remained poor over the state of Uttar Pradesh. More so for East and Central parts of the state. Firstly, Monsoon made a rather delayed onset over the state and then rains remained far and few from showing up over the state for quite a long time, leaving a large deficit across the entire state.
As per Skymet Weather, the weather across this trio, that is over Kanpur, Allahabad, and Lucknow is driven by the Monsoon trough that passes through Allahabad when in a normal position. The other two, being in proximity to the trough, receives a good amount of rains when the trough keeps controlling the activity, oscillating over the area, causing rain and thundershowers over the state, and in general over the region.
Until mid-July, most Monsoon systems were moving south of its position, keeping the location far to the north. Due to this, the activity remained confined to Madhya Pradesh. However, in the last couple of days, Monsoon remained active to vigorous over the region and over the trio.
In the last 24 hours also, heavy rains to the tune of 186 mm were reported in Kanpur which is the second highest 24 hour’s fall in a decade, the highest being recorded in the year 2008 at 210 mm. Moreover, with this high amount, the city has almost recorded two-thirds of its total monthly rains that stands at 300.8 mm.

On the similar note, Lucknow also recorded a whopping 82 mm of rains which is the third highest single-day rainfall in the last ten years, the highest being 272.4 mm in 1960. These rains helped the city to reach close to its monthly total of 270 mm.
Though the rains over Allahabad were lesser at 18 mm, the city’s monthly total is also the least in comparison with the other two at 210 mm.
As per Skymet Weather, all the three districts were reeling under rainfall deficiency exceeding even 50% prior to these spells. However, the last few spells helped in pushing up the rainfall deficiency of all the three at a satisfactory position.
As on July 31, Kanpur has become a rainfall surplus districts at 7%, Allahabad is still deficient by 23% meanwhile, Lucknow is also in excess rains by 19%.
With the low-pressure area still camping over the Central parts of Uttar Pradesh, more rains are expected with the possibility of heavy to very heavy spells at a few places in the next 48 hours. This may result in deteriorating the already waterlogged streets. Subsequently, the foothills are also likely to have heavy rains.
Skymet Weather expects some more heavy rains for the pocket for the next three to four days that may trigger waterlogging and flash floods in parts.
