After remaining subdued for last many days, the Southwest Monsoon have finally picked up pace over Kolkata during the last 48 hours. All thanks to the fresh weather system that has now intensified into a deep depression.
The system that had developed in Northwest Bay of Bengal as cyclonic circulation, has shifted north-northeastwards and is now seen over Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal, around 100 km away from Kolkata.
The capital city has recorded heavy showers of 42.8 mm in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday. Similar activity was witnessed on Monday wherein Kolkata has seen 57.8 mm
With the system prevailing in close proximity of Kolkata, we expect heavy showers to continue for another 24 hours. Rains will also be accompanied with squally winds with the speed ranging between 50 kmph to 70 kmph.
Thereafter, as the system weakens, rains will also reduce but light to moderate rainfall will continue for another 48 hours.
The ongoing rainy spell has reduced both the maximum and minimum temperatures that are now settling below normal by at least two degrees. Similar weather conditions will persist over the region during the next couple of days.
So far, Kolkata has recorded 225.5 mm of rain against the normal average rainfall of 352.4 mm. As on August 9, the cumulative rainfall deficiency for Kolkata stands at 17% but with some good rains in offing, we expect to cover up to some extent.
