More good rains expected along the East Coast

November 2, 2015 1:21 PM |

Visakhapatnam rainIn the last 2 to 3 days the east coast of the country, particularly coastal Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have received some very good amounts of rain. For instance Visakhapatnam and Kalingapatnam have received 191 mm and 150 m of rain, respectively in last 48 hours. Chennai and other parts of coastal Tamil Nadu have also been receiving heavy rains during the same period.

A trough is currently running from a cyclonic circulation over Lakshadweep region to the northeastern states across Kerala, Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and North Bay of Bengal.

Moreover, a cyclonic circulation over Andhra Pradesh coast along the trough has enhanced rainfall activity over coastal Andhra Pradesh like Visakhapatnam and Kalingapatnam.

According to weather models at Skymet, Coastal Andhra Pradesh is likely to receive good rain for another 24 to 48 hours. While Tamil Nadu will receive rain for next 3 to 4 days. Thereafter, the trough will start weakening and patchy rain will be observed over Coastal Andhra Pradesh.

As the Northeast Monsoon has made onset, the southern parts of the east Coast will continue to observe sporadic rain.
Normally October and November are the months for the formation of cyclonic circulations over the Bay of Bengal. Therefore, heavy rainfall along the east coast during these months are not uncommon.

However, no weather system in the Bay of Bengal has developed to become a depression or a deep depression so far. These systems have been confined to cyclonic circulations and low pressure areas only.

A major reason for the Bay of Bengal to remain silent, in terms of strong weather system could be attributed to the strong El Nino this year.
