North India has been grappling with a persistently weak monsoon this year. Between June 1 and July 25, the region experienced a 16% rainfall deficit. States like Haryana and Punjab have been particularly hard hit, with deficits of 40% and 44% respectively. Chandigarh, too, has faced a severe drought-like situation with a 57% deficiency. While Delhi has been relatively better off with a 3% deficit, the overall picture for the region remains grim.

Ladakh stands as a stark exception, having enjoyed a surplus of 48%. However, for the rest of North India, the prevailing hot and humid conditions have been a cause for concern But there's a silver lining on the horizon. The monsoon is finally showing signs of revival. The axis of the monsoon trough is now shifting northward to its normal position, a development that is expected to persist for the next 4-5 days. Moreover, a feeble Western disturbance is hovering over the Western Himalayas, while a cyclonic circulation has formed over Northwest Uttar Pradesh. The combined effect of these weather systems is set to trigger a significant increase in rainfall across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, and western Uttar Pradesh. The Skymet has forecast active monsoon conditions for the entire Northwest India, including the Western Himalayas, for at least the next week.

This much-needed rainfall is expected to bring significant relief from the oppressive heat and humidity that has been plaguing the region. As the rain spell progresses, the deficit is likely to reduce considerably, improving the overall monsoon situation in North India. While the impending rainfall is undoubtedly welcome news, it's essential to remain vigilant and prepared for any potential weather-related challenges.
