Monsoon Update- Karnataka receives good showers, Monsoon surge still subdued over Kerala

June 21, 2014 1:10 PM |

Skymet Meteorology Division in India has kept its readers updated with the advancement of Southwest Monsoon and as predicted it has now advanced further into remaining parts of Telangana and north interior Karnataka, most parts of Marathawada and some more parts of Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha and east Madhya Pradesh.

Subdued activity could be seen over Kerala since the 15th of June and the Monsoon surge still remains week but seems to be gradually reducing the percentage of rain deficit. Heavy showers in Kerala began to make up for less Monsoon rain in the state, reducing the rain deficit from 40% till 10th of June to 27%. The deficiency remained so till the 18th of June but reduced to 22% on the 19th and now the deficiency stands at 18%.

According to the latest weather update by Skymet, in a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Friday, Alappuzha received 1 mm, Kannur 15 mm, Punalur received 20 mm of rain, Kottayam 10 mm, Kozhikode 4 mm and Thiruvananthapuram 3.3 mm of rain. Looking at these figures we can say that though percentage of deficiency has reduced, the intensity of rain hasn’t increased in Kerala.

Meanwhile, Karnataka continues to receive good showers.

Rain in Karnataka

In a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Friday Agumbe received 68.4 mm of rain, Karwar 70.2 mm, Mangalore 14 mm, Honnavar 59.3 mm and Madikeri 43 mm. Panaji in Goa received only 6 mm of rain.

Rain in South India picked up considerably from the 11th of June but this increase in rain still hasn't been able to make up for the deficit in the region.

Deficiency in the National Cumulative Average Monsoon rain reduced from 42% to 39% in last 24 hours. On a whole South India is facing a rain deficit of about 22%. Deficiency over coastal Karnataka reduced as well, to about 26% now. Though Konkan and Goa are receiving continuous rain the deficit still remains at 33%
