Monsoon to remain active in Maharashtra; good rains in offing

The state of Maharashtra has become one of the rainiest pockets of the country during Southwest Monsoon season. The overall rainfall performance of the state as a whole as on July 3 stands at 16%.

In fact, all the four divisions of the state are experiencing surplus rains. As per the above-mentioned date, Konkan region is the most, 31% rainfall surplus division, followed by Marathwada at 20% rain surplus, Vidarbha 9% and Madhya Maharashtra witnessing normal rains.

In the last 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Tuesday, Mumbai's Santacruz Observatory recorded 118 mm of rains, Colaba recorded 73 mm, Dahanu 74 mm, Alibag 65 mm, Mahabaleshwar 40 mm, Ratnagiri 34 mm, Vengurla 25 mm, Akola 6 mm and Pune recorded 1 mm of rains.

As per Skymet Weather, the offshore trough is at present active and is running from South Gujarat to coastal Karnataka. In the wake of this, heavy to extremely heavy rains are expected to continue over many parts of Konkan division. Thus, cities like Mumbai, Dahanu, Ratnagiri, and Vengurla are expected to continue with heavy rains.

Meanwhile, parts of Madhya Maharashtra including cities like Pune, Ahmednagar, Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara may receive scattered light to moderate rains.

On the contrary, parts of Vidarbha and Marathwada are expected to remain mostly warm along with cloudy skies. The cities like Nagpur, Akola, Wardha, Gondia, Parbhani, Hingoli, Aurangabad, Amravati and Washim are likely to remains mostly dry. However, isolated rains can still be expected. This situation is likely to persist for the next 48 hours.

Thereafter, a cyclonic circulation is likely to form over North-West Bay of Bengal on July 5. This weather system would move west-northwestwards and would, in turn, increase the rain activities over Vidarbha and Marathwada by July 6.  Henceforth, between July 7 and 8, almost the entire state would get good rains along with reduced temperatures.

At this stage, let us see the impact of this weather on the agriculture belt of Maharashtra:

The farmers of Vidarbha and Marathwada are advised to sow Kharif crops like Cotton, Soybean, Pigeonpea, Green Gram, Black gram and Sorghum upon receipt of sufficient rains. That is when there is soil moisture for assured germination. Vegetables like Bitter Gourd, Apple Gourd, Cluster bean, Cowpea, etc can be cultivated during this period.

The farmers of Konkan are advised to drain out excess water from rice field and prepare water channels to drain out excess water from Mango, Cashew, and Sapota.
