Though light to moderate spells has occurred in the course of the last 24 hours, but then in the last three to four days, heavy to very heavy rains have eluded the ‘seven sisters’ states.

The reason could be attributed to the formation of low pressure area over North Bay of Bengal which slowly intensified into a well-marked low pressure area and restricted the moisture laden winds over northeast states.

Now, we expect subdued activity to continue for another two to three days.

Throughout 24 hours from 08:30 am on Tuesday, Itanagar recorded heavy spells to the tune of 46 mm, followed by Cherrapunji 21 mm, Lengpui 19 mm, Guwahati 19 mm, Shillong 17 mm, Silchar 11 mm, Kailashahar 9 mm, Golaghat 9 mm, Kohima 7 mm, Aizawl 6 mm and Agartala saw 4 mm of light spells.

On July 21, another fresh low pressure is likely to develop over North Bay of Bengal which may increase the rains over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura for couple of days around July 22 and 23.But then again this weather system will move away westwards leading to decrease in the rain activity over the region.

So, the rain deficiency is likely to persist.
