Southwest monsoon made onset over Kerala on 30th May 2024, a little earlier than the scheduled date. The state observed decent showers for nearly 72 hours after the onset. However, the intensity and spread has substantially decreased over the last three days. In the first five days of the season, the state has a shortfall of over 12% rainfall. Earlier, the start of the month had recorded 32% excess rainfall in the first two days. The shortfall may increase over the next one week.
The state of Kerala rains heavily after the onset of the monsoon. Breaks, if any, are short and sweet. In most locations, rain is a regular feature, on most days. Heavy and widespread rainfall is synonymous with the onset phase of monsoon. June and July are the rainiest months with almost equal share, during the monsoon season. June and July together, record double the rainfall of August and September, combined. The rains recede significantly in September and this month has a normal of a mere 271.8mm rainfall against the four-month seasonal quota of over 2000 mm.
The state of Kerala rains during monsoon, as and when the Arabian Sea surge builds up along the coast. Also, the monsoon stream becomes stronger along the coast, when monsoon low pressure or depression form in the Bay of Bengal. Both these scenarios are nearly silent and unlikely to pick up for the next week or could be longer. Any large deficiency build-up during the month of June becomes difficult to catch up, at a later date, as it happened last year. The state remained deficit by a huge 60% in June 2023 and the season ended with a shortfall of 34% rainfall.
