Monsoon showers are likely for the capital city, Chennai, for the next 3-4 days. Even after the onset of the monsoon, the rains were far and few. The regional observatory at Nungambakkam has not received any measurable rainfall for the last 10 days. The airport observatory Meenambakkam, received a spell of thundershowers, around midnight on 02nd June, amounting to 15mm rainfall. Earlier, the city was reeling with mercury levels in 40’s at the fag end of May. The monsoon stream has eased the heat a bit and day temperatures are now confined to about 35°C.
There is a cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal, off Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu coast. Also, a trough is extending along the coast, from North Coastal Andhra Pradesh to North Tamil Nadu. Feeble cyclonic circulation may also get embedded in the trough, west abeam Chennai. These conditions are quite favourable some moderate showers over the city and suburbs, for the next 3-4 days.
Southwest monsoons remain mostly silent for Tamil Nadu state. Being in the rain shadow zone, heavy spells are rather few and only light to moderate rainfall takes place. The cloudy sky and the sea breeze in the afternoon and evening will provide relief from the oppressive heat and humidity. Rain and thundershowers are expected in the night time, for the next 3-4 days. The spell could be a little heavier tonight. Moderate showers are likely on 05th and 06th June. Light rainfall will continue, the next day, on 07th June. Subsequently, it is likely to dry up, on the weekend and could continue till mid-week next.
